Charge

gallipoliScenes in war movies showing masses of nameless soldiers marching into certain death so that other nameless soldiers could press forward behind them have always affected me deep in my guts.

Movies about Normandy, Gettysburg, the Light Brigade, Agincourt, or Gallipoli were so vivid and frightening to me as a kid that when I see something like that now, I can’t tell any longer if I’m reacting to the movie or my own meta-reaction, the memory of my horror of being an innocent cinephile trapped in a movie theater and forced to watch my poor fictional comrades dying around me.
